About
The idea behind Kush Junkie was birthed in East Houston by Dank Lucas in 2008. This was in a place an time where marijuana was looked down upon and still widely illegal. People enjoyed the plant and what it stood for but did not want the their life to be labeled a "Junkie" so it was smoked on the low. It was a thing you did not want your family or job to know because they would view you as lazy or a problem. At this same time Dank was trying to find a lane in the fashion world and already had 4 convictions for the same charge of possession of marijuana ( Its up to 11 now) . He was told the plant is ruining his life and he should find something else to do while fighting multiple cases. Thats when the idea to show the stigma that weed isn't a problem and you can still be hardworking and successful while being a stoner came up. Putting the words Kush and Junkie together came after a constantly hearing the older generation call getting high "Smoking Dope". Then a switch went off to put a name to the lifestyle and brand that was being built to be called Kush Junkie. The idea was to shatter fashion and society standards of being safe and politically correct and to be able to elevate while doing whatever it is you do without caring what others think. It wasn't jus about smoking weed or being a stoner, but to be whoever you choose to be unapologetically. Back in 2010 people loved the brand but the majority was scared to wear the shirts around family or co-workers. Stores would take meetings for new merchandise but deny us because it was viewed as a negative brand. Through perseverance and constant reinvention the brand is still here almost 20 years later. Laws have changed, stigma of being dope is gone. It is viewed legal and normal now and sold and taxed by the same ones that gave us a criminal record. We have had several designs stolen, other brands birthed from copying different collections we made. Even to the point people have even spelled Kush Junky without the IE and made their own brand not knowing they will forever be labeled bootleg and the canal street version. Imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but you don't wanna get caught wearing none of that shit. Our new journey is to push the fashion envelope forward even more and be able to put our logo on anything. We have ventured into the legal hemp market and hope in the future we can be found in a neighborhood or dispensary near you.
